As we enter the New Year, I wanted to take some time to reflect on the common themes that appeared and lessons I learned throughout the past 365 days. While many people believe that January 1st is a starting point where we should begin changing our lives drastically, I believe we are continuously changing day by day without even realizing it. However, I am thankful that the new year is a point in time that allows me to acknowledge the progress I’ve made as I continue to grow as a person.
- It is okay to realize you’ve outgrown things–jobs, friendships, lifestyles, etc. Sometimes we hold so tightly onto things because they are familiar and we fear that we may not find that comfort again. The good news is that we can, and it is only once you let go of those things that new beginnings will bring an abundance of joy, new experiences, and relationships into your life.
- Surrounding yourself with people who value the same things as you and share similar goals as your own is so important. Surround yourself with positive, kind, inspiring people who possess character traits that you admire, and those who bring out the best in you. Additionally, put yourself in settings where you will be more likely to meet like-minded people such as going to workout classes if you value health and wellness.
- “There are no strangers here; Only friends you haven’t met yet” -William Butler Yeats. I’ve met so many amazing people by simply starting conversations with strangers, many of which turned into friendships. Talk to people everywhere you go–in your apartment complex, classes, jobs, parties, bars, restaurants, cashiers, places you travel to, etc.
- We are capable of more than we give ourselves credit for. I completed the 75 hard challenge over the summer–it was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done, but I was successful because I believed in myself and had supportive people around me.
- It’s never too late to turn your dreams into your reality. I have loved writing my whole life and wanted to start a blog for years– it was something I always said I would do, but didn’t follow through with due to being a perfectionist. But here I am now, finally starting my blog! With this being said, if there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, start now. You don’t have to instantly be perfect at it.
What did you learn this year?
